Business Monday: Building A Successful Career for Beginners

In this edition of our discussion on career and personal development, we will be considering how to build a career as a fresh graduate or a beginner in any career path. A career has developmental stages, and it needs the strong involvement of the person undertaking it to get to the desired peak.

Having looked at what a career is and its relevance to personal and business development, it is important to consider these practical tips for building a successful career as a young graduate or a starter.

  • Identify a career: The first thing you need to do is to find your niche. An area of interest or field you know you enjoy doing and you are sure of doing so well. This is very simple; everyone has one of two things they wish to do or find interesting, or they have a certain kind of job they wish to do. This can make them study a particular course in school or take a particular training or professional certification. The most important thing is to search your heart and find a career. Finding a career is a function of knowing what you are good at, your area of gifting or talent, what you can do with ease and what you can’t and won’t get frustrated doing.
  • Good conduct: To build a career one needs to be diligent and hardworking, consistent and devoted to the work. As said earlier, growing your career goes beyond merely thinking it’s just a job. It must be seen as a significant part of your life and should be treated as such. Therefore, being hardworking is needed to do well in it. This has to do with sending reports when necessary, trying to solve problems and working in line with the company's objectives through seeing oneself as the owner of a business or someone who will also set up his or her business one day. There should be a strong commitment to learning more about one’s trade and also sharpening relevant skills towards the career. Honesty is another good conduct expected of a career builder. If you are honest you will gain the respect of fellow workers and also give us energy and make you bold as well. Approaching life and your career with good behavior and enthusiasm, things are achieved more easily. A good attitude can help you to scale through the hurdles of your career when times are tough. I once had a manager who was the overall best sales manager of my company nationally at that time. We were all dazed when the company decided to right-size at some point and she was asked to go. What went wrong no one can tell, we felt our company was not fair to her, but we later found out that the company could no longer curtail her excess, lack of respect for senior management staff and abuse of power by the junior ones. Her file with the Human resource unit was filled with complaints, so when the company needed people to go, her wrong conduct fetched her out.
  • Also, as a career builder, you need to be punctual to the place of work, occasionally when you appear late, acknowledge with apology any delay in arrival or delivery in the outcome of any assignment.
  • Enhance your communication skills: You need to be able to communicate well in writing and speaking. Oral and written communication is important for career growth. If you can't present well before your colleagues and bosses in meetings at work when your organization expands and the opportunity comes for you to represent the company in external meetings or to manage a new branch, how do you expect the management to trust that you will be able to manage that effectively well? If you are the type that hardly hears you out in meetings without them encouraging you to speak up or your memos or emails are not properly written, then you need to take that very seriously and work on it. It is advisable to note that your verbal and oral expression go a long way in determining how good you are or can be.
